Put Yourself First
The safety instructions on an airplane always tell you to put your oxygen mask on before helping others. What good are we to our loved ones if we aren’t taking care ourselves?
Self care does not mean you are an egomaniac who ignores the needs of others. It means you respect and care for yourself in order to better serve those most important to you. Putting yourself first means:
- Valuing yourself enough to take good care of your mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
- Consciously carving time into your schedule to exercise, eat well, sleep, and do things you love.
- Understanding that by doing so you are putting yourself in the best position to care for others in your life.
It is impossible to be a good parent, employee, friend, etc. long-term if you don’t spend a little time on yourself. The better you feel and the healthier you are, the better foundation you have to give back and excel in providing for your loved ones. Feeling, looking, and performing well are all intimately connected and vital parts of allowing you to live your very best life.
