Andrea Scott– Grand Rapids Instructor

Job outside of FLEX:

Leadership consultant

Why are you passionate about fitness:

Like many Americans I am fighting a battle to keep active, even with the best intentions it’s a daily battle to move better and move more. It is particularly important for me because I am genetically predisposed to hypertension, high cholesterol, heart attack and strokes.

At 25, I reached a pain point, I was sick of losing the game of being “skinny”. So I decided to focus on habits rather than outcome. With the support of a personal trainer, I got truly healthy for the first time ever and also kicked the eating disorder that occasionally knocked on my door. I was finally happy being me!

The confidence that came with that journey is one that I wanted to gift to others. I took a leap of faith and made a career out of fitness.

Fitness background:

Oh boy! I have worn many hats in the fitness industry but the most important is that of a humble student.

I hold the following certifications: NASM certified personal trainer, AFPA sports and nutrition consultant, certified sports coach, corrective exercise specialist, TRX qualified and more.

What type of FLEX class is your favorite:

I love all FLEX classes, well almost all. I am not particularly fond of 24 minute rounds, those days push me to a space that is uncomfortable!

What about FLEX made you want to teach here:

It was destiny. After over eight years with MVP Sports Clubs, I knew as I transitioned towards a career in consulting, that I was going to miss teaching so much.

I tried a lot of local fitness studios looking for the right fit. At FLEX we use so many different modalities and intervals that results are achieved but safety is still a priority. All you have to do is show up, embrace what we have planned for and do your best.

Also, the staff is incredibly cognizant of form. They embrace the move better philosophy before all else. It’s like offering a personal training feel in a group fitness setting.

Favorite way to spend a weekend:

Being a wife and mother. The weekends fly by so I use them to recenter, charge and rest up. We are fortunate to have a family property on the lakeshore and on a northern Michigan farm. These retreats have become my soul spots. I do my best job disconnecting from distractions and connecting with my beautiful family on weekend trips to one or the other!

Why are you passionate about fitness:

Health and fitness is so important at any age but especially AS we age. I love being able to share that with people, inspiring them to be their best selves and have a higher quality of life.

Fitness background:

I grew up playing soccer and dancing my whole life, but it wasn’t until college I truly found my passion for fitness and training. I’ve continued my own workout routine for the past several years but about two years ago I realized I wanted to help others with health and fitness, so I became a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).

What type of FLEX class is your favorite:

That is tough! I love the weight-based classes but I also love the TRX.

What about FLEX made you want to teach here:

Teaching a fitness class is something I’ve wanted to do for nearly 10 years. But… I am pretty picky. I didn’t want to just teach or train at any gym or studio. When I came to FLEX I immediately realized how different (and awesome) it was. It just felt like the perfect fit.

Favorite way to spend a weekend:

Well if it’s summer–definitely getting outside for a long bike ride and enjoying an evening with friends by a bonfire. But if it’s winter–watching some Harry Potter cuddled up on the couch. Oh duh, and getting in a morning FLEX workout

Thanks, ladies! We are so excited to welcome Ashley and Andrea to our team!
