FLEXspotlight: Maria G.

Meet Maria, a Lansing FLEXcitizen since early 2015. We are so proud of all that Maria has accomplished since starting FLEX, including losing over 100 pounds (!!). Two years and over 350 classes later, Maria  has reached her goals and looks and feels better than ever. Read her fitness story below:

-What changes have you experienced since coming to FLEX?

When I think back to my first classes, it’s truly hard for me to believe how far I’ve come. I actually had a hard time doing some of the stretches at first, let alone the exercises! Now I can do so much more, not only in class, but in my everyday life. I am more energetic, I’m stronger and my stress level is much lower, all the result of losing nearly 100 pounds. That makes me a lot more confident and motivated to do even more. I never would have thought that I’d become a person who relied on fitness as a part of her routine, but now I hate missing more than a couple days a week of FLEX. 

-What would you recommend to others that are interested in getting started at FLEX?

I think as a working woman and a mom, it’s really easy to find a million reasons to focus on things other than your own well-being. Five years ago I would’ve felt really guilty spending the time and money on FLEX that I do. I would tell people considering FLEX not to underestimate the benefits that come from taking care of yourself. I’m better in all aspects of my life because I do this for myself.

I’d also tell them not to get discouraged if you have a hard time keeping up at first. It took me an entire year before I attempted my first burpee. The instructors are very good about offering alternatives for people at different fitness levels. Before you know it, you’ll be adding more and more activity to each class.

-What do you love most about FLEX classes?

I love that the classes are different every single day so you never get bored, and that you spend time on both strength and cardio training. Also, the environment is very positive. It really doesn’t matter how fit or thin you are, everyone just wants you to reach your goals. Most of all, I love that I don’t need to think about what to do; there is an experienced instructor who has it all figured out and encourages me to dig deep and get it done. I know that there is no way that I would work as hard if I tried to do this on my own.
